Jana Hartmann is a visual artist based in Frankfurt am Main. In her long-term projects, she explores specific aspects of the complex and ambivalent relationship between man and nature. With “MASTERING the ELEMENTS”, she conducted a photographic research into the scientific exploration and conquest of nature from the beginnings of alchemy to the present day. In her photo documentary “Die Tür ins Meer“ (The Door into the Sea), she examines the global phenomenon of life-size representations of nature placed in public spaces and questions their intention and effect. In ‘The Future is Present’, she has been exploring the natural and social processes of change currently taking place concerning the forest ecosystem, with a particular focus on the increasing virtualisation of nature. In 2022, Hartmann was appointed the 13th „Photographer in Residence“ by the Darmstadt Werkbundakademie - in this context, she created her series “Immergrün”, exploring the challenges and potentials of urban nature.

Following her conviction that our complex world is best understood by taking a transdisciplinary approach, Jana Hartmann's work is based on multi-perspective research and dialogue with, among others, natural scientists and humanities scholars. Depending on her thematic focus, she works in analogue or digital photography - from photograms to photogrammetry. Her motifs are correspondingly diverse: they include darkroom experiments, photographs of studio models and scientific experiments, images taken in virtual space as well as staged and documentary photographs of nature. Hartmann presents her works both in book format and in installations, often using her research material for visual contextualization.

Hartmann trained in various stands of visual art in 2012/13 as a visiting student of the Master of Arts program at Cranbrook Art Academy, Bloomfield, USA. In 2017 she received a scholarship from the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Madrid, Spain, to complete a European Master of Contemporary Photography program.

Since 2012 she has in curated solo and group exhibitions nationally at the Alfred Ehrhardt Foundation (Berlin), the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, the Museum Giersch (Frankfurt am Main), the Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie and the Institut Francais (Cologne, Düsseldorf, Berlin) and internationally at the Kunst Haus Wien (Austria), the Mai Manó Ház - House of Photography (Budapest, Hungary), the Center for Visual Arts (Denver, USA), the Lenzburg Photo Festival (Switzerland), the HAAM Gallery (Lahore, Pakistan) and the PHOTO 24 Festival (Melbourne, Australia).

In 2021 she published her first photo book titled MASTERING the ELEMENTS with the publishing house The Eriskay Connection in Breda, the Netherlands. The book was shortlisted for the "The Paris Photo—Aperture Foundation First PhotoBook Award 2021" Paris/New York and "The Best Photography Book of the Year 2022" at PHotoESPANA Madrid, Spain. The dummy of this book was already nominated for the "Unseen Dummy Awards 2019" Amsterdam, the Netherlands. 

Seeking to foster discourse between the arts, science and a broader public, Hartmann initiated and organizes the transdisciplinary dialog series, PERSPEKTIVWECHSEL, in the Rhein-Main area.

Jana Hartmann ist eine bildende Künstlerin mit Atelier in Frankfurt am Main. In ihren Langzeitprojekten beschäftigt sie sich mit verschiedenen Aspekten der vielschichtigen und ambivalenten Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Natur. Mit „MASTERING the ELEMENTS“ unternahm sie eine fotografische Recherche zur wissenschaftlichen Erforschung und Eroberung der Natur von den Anfängen der Alchemie bis zur Gegenwart. In ihrer Fotodokumentation "Die Tür ins Meer" untersucht sie das weltweit anzutreffende Phänomen lebensgroßer im öffentlichen Raum platzierter Naturdarstellungen und hinterfragt deren Intention und Wirkung. Seit 2020 befasst sie sich in "The Future is Present" mit den gegenwärtig zu beobachtenden natürlichen und gesellschaftlichen Veränderungsprozessen rund um das Ökosystem Wald unter besonderer Berücksichtung der zunehmenden Virtualisierung von Natur. In 2022 wurde Hartmann von der Darmstädter Werkbundakademie zur 13. Darmstädter Stadtfotografin berufen – im diesem Rahmen entstand ihre Werkserie „Immergrün“, in der Sie sich mit den Herausforderungen und Potentialen von Stadtgrün auseinandersetzte. 

Ihrer Überzeugung folgend, dass unsere komplexe Welt am ehesten durch eine transdisziplinäre Betrachtungsweise zu verstehen ist, basieren Jana Hartmanns Arbeiten auf multiperspektivischer Recherche und dem Dialog u.a. mit Natur- und Geisteswissenschaftlern. Dabei erforscht sie die große Bandbreite des von ihr präferierten Mediums Fotografie, in dem sie je nach thematischem Fokus analog oder digital arbeitet – vom Photogramm bis zur Photogrammetrie. Dementsprechend vielfältig sind Ihre Motive: Sie umfassen Dunkelkammerexperimente, Fotografien von Studiomodellen und wissenschaftlichen Versuchen, Aufnahmen im virtuellen Raum sowie inszenierte und dokumentarische Naturaufnahmen. Ihre Arbeiten präsentiert Hartmann sowohl im Buchformat als auch in Wand- bzw. Rauminstallationen, für die sie ihre Motive mit ihrem Recherchematerial kontextualisiert.

Jana Hartmann wurde an der Cranbrook Art Academy, Bloomfield, MI, USA, als Gaststudentin des Master of Arts-Programms 2012/13 in verschiedenen Bereichen der bildenden Kunst unterrichtet. 2017 erhielt sie ein Stipendium des Istituto Europeo di Design in Madrid, Spanien für ihren Abschluss in dem European Master of Contemporary Photography-Programm.

Seit 2012 hat sie u.a. in kuratierten Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen national bei der Alfred Ehrhardt Stiftung (Berlin), dem Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, dem Museum Giersch (Frankfurt am Main), den Darmstädter Tagen der Fotografie und dem Institut Francais (Köln, Düsseldorf, Berlin) sowie international beim Kunst Haus Wien (Österreich), dem Mai Manó Ház - House of Photography (Budapest, Ungarn), dem Center for Visual Arts (Denver, USA), dem Fotofestival Lenzburg (Schweiz), der HAAM Gallery (Lahore, Pakistan) und beim PHOTO 24 Festival (Melbourne, Australien) ausgestellt. 

Im Jahr 2021 veröffentlichte sie ihr erste künstlerische Forschungspublikation mit dem Titel MASTERING the ELEMENTS beim Verlag The Eriskay Connection in den Niederlanden. Das Buch wurde für den "Paris Photo - Aperture Foundation First PhotoBook Award 2021" in Paris/New York und für "The Best Photography Book of the Year 2022" von PHotoESPANA in Madrid nominiert. Der Buchentwurf wurde bereits für die Unseen Dummy Photobook Awards 2019 in Amsterdam nominiert. 

Um den Diskurs zwischen Kunst, Wissenschaft und einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit zu fördern, initiierte und organisiert Hartmann die transdisziplinäre Dialogreihe PERSPEKTIVWECHSEL im Rhein-Main-Gebiet.
